Jet Lee Review: Strictly for a few laughs
Jet Lee is the much-awaited comedy drama directed by Ritesh Rana, starring comedian Satya in the lead role. Released amid good promotions and decent buzz, let’s see how far the film manages to entertain.
Story:
Prajapathi, played by Ajay, bankrupts his Prajapathi Bank for fifteen thousand crores. Special agent Shivani Roy, played by Rhea Singha, is assigned to safely bring him alive from Dubai on a special flight. However, Dr. Ved Vyas, played by Satya, unexpectedly enters this operation on the same flight. Having forgotten his own past, what exactly does Ved Vyas do? Why is he on the flight? Does he have any connection to the mission or the bank scam? All this forms the rest of the story.
Performances
Satya can easily be called the one-man show of the film. With his trademark comic timing and performance, he carries several scenes effortlessly. Even when scenes appear simple on paper, Satya impresses with instant variations in expressions and long-length dialogues delivered naturally. His episodes with Vennela Kishore work well and generate decent laughs.
Vennela Kishore also performs solidly in his role. Ajay impresses as the villain, while Viva Harsha brings laughs through scenes involving the co-pilot characters. Rhea Singha looks glamorous and also performs well in the action portions. The supporting cast also does a fair job.
Technical Aspects
The production values are quite good and visually rich. The VFX team deserves appreciation for creating the flight setup convincingly. Kaala Bhairava’s music is decent, while the background score works effectively. The cinematography is neat, though the editing could have been sharper with a few scenes trimmed.
Analysis:
Anyone familiar with the combination of Ritesh Rana and Satya can easily expect entertaining comedy elements, and the film delivers in several places. Ritesh Rana’s trademark one-liners, quirky comedy writing, and funny background details create a number of laugh-worthy moments.
Another major highlight is the production quality. Since most of the story takes place inside a flight, the atmosphere and visual effects look impressive and top-notch.
While the film has entertaining moments here and there, it lacks a strong underlying story. Apart from the comedy scenes, the rest of the narrative feels routine and predictable. The first half is decent, but the second half becomes dull at places.
Satya’s role feels somewhat incomplete in terms of characterization. Some middle portions turn repetitive and boring. Certain logical issues also weaken the film, especially as it approaches the climax.
Coming to director Ritesh Rana, his signature style of comedy is visible throughout the film. However, the story and screenplay could have been stronger. While he succeeds in extracting good performances and designing comedy episodes and one-liners, the narrative needed better structuring.
Verdict:
Overall, Jet Lee works only in parts.. The comedy tracks involving Satya and Vennela Kishore manage to entertain to an extent, but the screenplay lacks consistency and tightness. While some scenes make the audience laugh, others end up feeling boring.
